When Holidays are Hard

 | December 11, 2018 | Posted by:

This season is the most tradition-filled time of the calendar year. Everywhere you look you see advertisements filled with happy families gathered around a Christmas tree or table. You see big smiles, sparkles, and lights. You see happiness in those pictures and your heart longs for what those pretend people have.

Not everything is merry and bright this time of year.

Not every family is laughing around a table or Christmas tree.

And there are certainly times when happiness is illusive.

We know that no family, tradition, or holiday season is perfect, but it doesn’t stop us from working hard to make it as close to perfect as possible. By January we’ll be burned out and our credit cards will have been maxed out. We will have tried and maybe we got close. Maybe we will have tried and watched everything fall apart.

No matter how your holiday season turns out you can have hope, and here are 3 reasons why.

  • There is a gift for you

Amidst all the hustle and bustle of gift giving there is something waiting just for you. You sing about it, maybe without even realizing it, in all the traditional Christmas carols. A baby was born to live a perfect life in your stead, dying for your sin so that you wouldn’t have to; all so that you could be reconciled to a God who is as merciful as he is just.

  • There is joy for you

Light overcomes darkness, and joy can be found in the midst of sorrow because of Jesus, the baby born to take away your sin. Joy is different from happiness because it doesn’t depend on circumstances. When Jesus is your hope, joy is overflowing.

  • There is a home and family for you

When you belong to Jesus, you belong to his family. You are no longer alone. His family becomes your family. His name becomes your name. Because you are his, you belong to him. You belong.

6 Ways to Boost Your Immunity

 | December 4, 2018 | Posted by:

Baby, it’s cold outside!

Winter is settling in and so are the bugs that keep going around. Everywhere we go we’re surrounded by people. Christmas shopping in malls, going to school, church nursery and Sunday school……

It’s enough to make you want to hibernate until spring.

With a few simple tricks, we can do our part to bring the risk of sickness down in our homes.

Before we get to the immune boosting tips, here are some things that you can do while out in public that will help limit the spread of germs.

  • Don’t use the handrails on stairs and escalators
  • Use paper towels to open bathroom doors when done
  • Use a natural hand sanitizer (you can find them from the major essential oil distributors like Young Living and DoTerra)

6 Ways to Boost Your Immunity

  • Make your soup with a whole chicken, bones and all. Let your chicken simmer on the bone all day before de-boning it. There are tons of nutrients that help your immune system (why do you think your mom’s chicken soup made you feel better?)
  • Garlic and oregano are great ingredients to add to your soup when you’re feeling run down
  • Limit your sugar intake
  • Get outside! Even a short walk in the sunshine can give you a Vitamin D boost (and mood boost, as well)
  • Consider adding kefir (or probiotics) to your diet. When you add it to smoothies you can’t even taste it
  • Dose yourself and your kiddos daily with elderberry syrup

There you have it! Six easy ways to help your household fight the sickies this winter. Did we miss something? Be sure to comment with ways you keep your family healthy!

4 Ways to be a Part of Your Neighborhood

I don’t often like to look back and see the past as the “golden years,” but there is a lot to be said for how our grandparents/great-grandparents integrated into their neighborhoods. My grandmother talks fondly about her good friend that lived across the street with whom she would share a cup of coffee each morning after their children ran off to school.

How sweet is that? Am I the only one whose heart squeezes at the thought of having a neighbor with whom I can share moments on a porch swing or under trees on a blanket in the yard?

This has been on my mind a lot lately, and have I’ve been wrestling with how to be more a part of my neighborhood.
