The holidays are here, and that means traveling to see friends and family.
Sitting for long periods of time can lead to swelling, which is uncomfortable and sometimes even painful.
Here are some tips for getting through those long car rides with less discomfort.
- Drink lots of water
Pregnant women should be drinking no less than a gallon of water per day. Make sure that your water intake doesn’t decrease because you’re in the car. Go prepared with four 1 liter bottles, or just make sure that you’re buying water at every stop.
- Stop every few hours to walk around and stretch
It can be tempting to push through, but it’s important to take the time to get up every few hours to let your blood circulate. Maybe choose a rest stop that has a grassy are and do some laps around it. Stretching also increases circulation.
- Eat wisely
It’s super fun to eat fun snacks while you’re in the car. After all, there’s not much else to do. Choosing wisely what you eat will go a long way in decreasing swelling. Make sure that your choices are low in sodium and sugary carbs. Take the time before you leave to chop up veggies and fruits. Some ideas are:
- Apples and peanut/almond butter
- Veggies and hummus
- Dark chocolate and berries
- Boiled eggs
